The Surprising Benefits of Apples

There are a wide variety of apples out there-from Red Delicious, McIntosh, Granny Smith, to Gala, Fuji, and Honeycrisp. So, in honor of National Apple Day, we thought we’d fill you in on some of the surprising benefits of apples, so let’s dive right in!

The skin of apples are filled with plant chemicals also known as flavonoids, vitamin C, and fiber (called pectin). For this reason, it is recommended that when you do consume the apple, eat it with the skin on! Some studies suggest that the flavonoids and fiber in the apple skin can help protect against blood vessel and heart damage, lower cholesterol, and can even help protect your cells’ DNA from oxidative damage, which is something that can actually lead to cancer.

Research shows the antioxidants in apples can slow the growth of cancer cells in those that do have cancer, and apples can also protect the cells in your pancreas, which can help lower your chance of type 2 diabetes-and apples are even considered a “diabetes friendly” fruit.

Science has suggested that apples can help aid in bone health, weight loss, gut health, heart and lung strength, and even your immune system (remember the saying “An Apple A Day Keeps The Doctor Away”?) Apples are low in sodium, fat, and cholesterol. Being that apples are filled with fiber, they may even make you feel satiated longer, and slow/aid in digestion. This is a great thing, as it can prevent you from overeating. The fiber in apples might actually also help with stomach issues, such as constipation or diarrhea, so keep this in mind next time you have an upset stomach.

One apple typically contains about 100 calories, 25 grams of carbohydrates, 19 grams of sugar, and 4 grams of fiber. So next time you are looking for a delicious, high quality nutritious snack after kickboxing or strength training-grab yourself an apple, slice it up and dip it in some nonfat greek yogurt mixed with PB2 and ENJOY!
